Don’t know why it took so long to realize

Hard to say I love you when I tell you lies

I got all these demons on my brain

And I know I’m the only one to blame

…I’ma make a change

Samm Henshaw, Only One to Blame

Henshaw sees how his lack of love has hurt and caused distance in his relationship. He sees that he has been selfish and deceitful, and how this makes him unable to love. Because he acknowledges the pain he has caused, he is motivated to make a change

Who are the people in your life that you’ve been feeling distant from, and desire a deeper relationship with?

Let’s break down the lyrics with some scriptures in order to understand how to get closer in those relationships through taking responsibility.

Don’t know why it took so long to realize

There are some people who ruin their own lives and then blame it all on God.

Proverbs 19:3 TPT

The first step in reconciling relationships comes from realizing what we have done to affect them. It is easier to blame God or other people for the problems that we cause ourselves.

When we experience pain and hurt as a result of someone else’s actions, the choices we make in response to that pain are our responsibility.

Reflection questions

  • Who do you blame for the distance in your relationships? How have you contributed to that distance?

Hard to say I love you when I tell you lies

Giving an honest answer is a sign of true friendship.

Proverbs 24:26 CEV

Honesty and admitting where we’ve made mistakes is a sign of true friendship. When we lie and hide, we can’t truly love the people around us. Taking responsibility is the first step to getting closer in our relationships, and starts with honesty.

Reflection questions

  • Who have you been unable to love because you won’t be honest and take responsibility?

I got all these demons in my brain, and I know I’m the only one to blame

Now I am glad— not because it caused you grief but because you were moved to make a permanent change that can happen only with the realization that your actions have gone against God—I’m glad to know you suffered no long-term loss because of what we did. [10] Now this type of deep sorrow, godly sorrow, is not so much about regret; but it is about producing a change of mind and behavior that ultimately leads to salvation. But the other type of sorrow, worldly sorrow, often is fleeting and only brings death.

[11] Look at what is happening among you! Notice how authentic and diligent you have become because this godly sorrow has been at work in your community. But there’s more: your desire to clear your name, your righteous anger, your respect, your longing, your zeal, and your concern for justice. All these demonstrate how you have been made clean.

2 Corinthians 7:9-11 Voice

Real change comes when our motivation is to reconcile relationships. Taking responsibility doesn’t mean feeling terrible about how bad we are, but rather taking decisive action to close the distance we’ve created in our relationships.

Reflection questions

  • How do you view taking responsibility? As something to make yourself feel bad, or as a way to get closer to God and friends?

Ima make a change

She has been forgiven of all her many sins. This is why she has shown me such extravagant love. But those who assume they have very little to be forgiven will love me very little.”

Luke 7:47 TPT

In this scripture, we see a woman who takes responsibility for her sins. The forgiveness that she received from God inspired her to love God and the people around her.

The moment we take responsibility for our sins and the ways we’ve hurt our relationships is the moment we get to see how much God forgives us. This motivates us to love God, family, and friends.

Reflection questions

  • For the people in your life that you want to be closer to, what do you need to take responsibility for, in order to love them?
